Tsowa Safari Island is located 40km upstream from the Victoria Falls, in the Zambezi National Park, Zimbabwe. It is a 16 bed luxury modern day Explorer style tented camp. Guests are transferred in open 4x4 vehicles from a private entrance to the Zambezi National Park to the edge of the Zambezi river and then transferred by boat to the island. Total transfer time from Victoria Falls is approximately 1 hour.
Sleeping under canvas on the Zambezi River listening to laughing hippo’s upstream or watching a herd of buffalo coming down to drink, it’s simple and natural luxury living in our safari tented camp.
Activities include game drives and guided game walks on the mainland through the Zambezi National Park, guided walks around the island home to magnificent Baobab trees and wonderful bird life, guided rafting down the Zambezi river with a picnic lunch and sun downer cruises on the river. Regrettably no children under 12 years.
Guided walks on the island are on offer daily and are a fantastic way to appreciate the true exclusivity of being on Tsowa Safari Island.
The trail touches all corners of the island with so much to see and learn from your guide along the way. Rare ground lilies flower early in the year and huge Mangosteen and Jackalberry trees line the tranquil river where a breeding pair of Pel’s fishing owls reside.
Other birding highlights can include the Schalow’s Turaco, Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, Rock Pratincole, African Finfoot and a multitude of other species.
This activity is for children 12 years and older.
Game Drives and Bushwalks
Your game drive "starts" when you are gliding across the swift waters of the Zambezi River to the mainland a few minutes away where your safari vehicle will be waiting to take you on a journey of discovery into the Zambezi National Park. The park is home to large herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as lion, hyena, giraffe and numerous species of antelope and other plains game.
These guided safari drives are approximately 4 hours and include a refreshment stop – either a coffee stop for morning drives or a sundowner stop for the afternoon safari drives. This activity is available for children 12 years and older.
Walking safaris are offered on the mainland in the Zambezi National Park which is considered a prime big game walking safari area. Your guide will keep you enthralled with his bush craft and abundant knowledge of the creatures, tracks and signs that you encounter along the way, all the while keeping your safety as paramount. There is so much to learn about the bush and being on foot encourages you to really tune in all your senses to fully appreciate all the sights and sounds. This activity is available for children from the age of 16 years and guests taking part do require a moderate level of fitness.
If you are unsure speak to your guides on arrival.
River Cruises
These take place in the late afternoon to enjoy the spectacular African sunsets along the Zambezi River.
Drinks and snacks are served as you cruise up the river while keeping an eye out for animals coming down to drink on the banks of the Zambezi National Park. The river cruise also provides a good opportunity to see some of the abundant aquatic birdlife that inhabits the banks of the Zambezi. This activity is for children 12 years and older.
